100% Tempranillo harvested from a single vineyard planted in 1950 and located in the Rioja Alavesa village of Labastida. Hand harvested with a strict selection before crushing at the winery. There is a three day maceration on the skins followed by a spontaneous fermentation for 9 days in wooden vats. the must is pumped over twice a day to extract flavour and colour. Aging is for 18 months in 50% French and 50% American oak barrels. At least another 6 months aging is given in bottle.
The nose is floral with violets and ripe red fruits (strawberry compote and dried red cherries) with toasted notes of brioche and cardamom. The palate is medium plus with round and ripe fruits dominating the flavours. There is a touch of oak along with some chocolate, aniseed and orange zest notes. Tannins are firm but well integrated and fine. Overall it is warm and expressive with excellent concentration. A lovely long, lingering finish.
Ideal with Iberian hams and sausages, red meats, game, stews and roasts.
